Mad River Coming to Manayunk
Written by Miss Manayunk

So, we hear that Mad River is coming to Manayunk. Great. That's just what Manayunk needs, another wanna-be-Olde-City nightspot. You know, its funny, we were out at the Brew Pub last night, taking in the Eau-D'Garbage that the BP is well known for on balmy summer nights, and we were looking around. Ok, I'll admit it, we were people-watching. The one major thing I noticed is that either Manayunk is becoming more like Olde City, or otherwise people are just beginning to dress like it. Whatever happened to Manayunk being the chill, summer spot to go when you're not down the shore? I didn't realize that leaopard-print minis on girls and v-neck tight black tees on guys were in-style for a Philly suburb outdoor deck bar. I mean, come on, people!! Oh, and another thing...stop shoving your tongue down your boyfriend's throat in public! That's just gross.

Manayunk Riverwalk Coming Soon
Written by Miss Manayunk

Manayunk has been fairly quiet for quite some time.

For a decade back in the late 1980s and 1990s, the onetime mill town by the Schuylkill was the go-to strip, hopping with new retail and restaurants. But by 1997, a movement backed by parking-strapped residents and abetted by restaurateurs who felt that more competition was bad lobbied their district councilman, Michael Nutter, to get Council to approve a five-year restaurant moratorium.

In the meantime, the new-restaurant action at least moved to Old City, Northern Liberties and Queen Village.

On Wednesday (6/11), Manayunk moved a step closer to getting fresh life: a "riverwalk" of storefronts and restaurants along the towpath that follows the canal behind Main Street, which would spark things up in the rear of the commercial strip. A City Council committee yesterday sent a bill to the full Council to allow an elevated outdoor deck behind Bourbon Blue restaurant at 2 Rector St. The Historical Commission and Licenses & Inspections also have to approve.

Written by Anna Grace Valley

A year ago, I left my husband and ventured out into the world of singledom. The Single World was a magical place full of wonder and lure. At the time, I liked to think of myself as Carrie, from Sex in the City, writing detailed accounts of my misadventures. I analyzed why I was feeling like an empty box, exploring the world around me for answers, only to find more questions that needed to be answered. Writing and talking was therapeutic. Although, because I had too many hobbies, my writing had to take a back seat. Not to mention, my brain was beginning to hurt. Who was I? Where was I going? Now that I had successfully left my husband, could I stop seeing my shrink? I mean, after all, hadn’t he been the problem? But alas, while other people aide in our self deterioration; we are always partly at fault. But I stopped seeing her anyway. Maybe it was because I got a boyfriend, who was as wonderful and perfect for me in every way possible.

Sex, er, Satan and the City
Written by Jayme Waxman
http://www.jamyewaxman.com/blog/2008/05/27/sex-er-satan-and-the-city/

I was on the phone with the Reverse Cowgirl, Susannah Breslin, today discussing a piece that she’s writing for Salon.com. I can’t say what she’s writing about exactly because a) I’d rather wait for the finished product and b) I’d rather you wait for the finished product too, but we talked a bit about Sex and the City, which apparently a lot of bloggers and sex pundits would be happier to refer to as Satan in the City. I know there are lots of people out there who think that Sex and the City is the worst thing to happen to female sexuality, but I disagree. I think we need to embrace the bits we can from the show, and discard all the rest. I watched Sex and the City, not religiously, and not at all at first, but eventually, and over time, I enjoyed the weekly ritual that changed the way we talked about female sexuality in mainstream media.

I’m not saying it’s the best thing, or even that it isn’t, at this point, an overdone, overcooked thing, but it is it’s own thing, four perspectives on sex and dating and shoes. And I’m happy to see Sex and the City attempting to wrap things up with what should be one final hurrah. I think that women all over the country, and probably the world, will benefit from the extra boost of SATC talk that will trickle down around water coolers across offices in buildings in places where the most exciting thing to happen all day may be nothing at all.

Style of Man Going Out of Business
Written by fredo2112
I have to begin this post by saying that I have been a regular customer on and off at SOM for nearly three years. Despite spotty service, I kept going there honestly because the girls were so cute. I know, terrible criteria upon which to choose a place that is supposed to first and foremost HELP you look better for the ladies, not hurt. Nonetheless, they were cheap, they could almost always accomodate me, and as I said, the scenery was nice.

Maybe they figured they could get away with giving such mediocre cuts because there were enough shmucks out there willing to fork over $35 to ogle a couple of cute asses while some third rate stylist chopped off all their hair. I dunno. Sadly, I was one of them on too many occasions.

But no more! I have now proudly removed the "S" (for SUCKER) from my forehead after my last and final experience there. About 2 weeks ago, I needed a simple cleaning up for the date I had the following evening. My usual stylist was on vacation, so Cathy the owner said she would take care of me. She has been cutting hair for 20 years she said. I figure no problem; I am in good hands.

Well, after explaining that all I needed was a simple trimming, that I wanted to keep the length, she proceeds to give me the shortest haircut I've had since shaving my head 3 years ago. I'm not kidding. I was ready for boot camp, or to star in Dumb and Dumber III. So I say to her, after we are finished, "You know, I gotta ask...can you please explain to me how you can be cutting hair for 20 years and a guy comes in and specifically asks you to keep his length, and you give him this? I mean how does that happen?"

Well, instead of a professional, courteous response which I would expect from OWNER of an establishment (e.g. "I am so sorry, next cut is on us...or so sorry, this cut's on us, please come back and let us make it right next time, etc.), she proceeds to tell me that it is NOT a short haircut and in fact she thinks it is a WONDERFUL haircut! I said, "Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous. I specifically asked you NOT to cut it short and look at me." To which she says, "That will be $35 please."

I was dumbstruck. The other girl she had working there couldn't even look up she was so embarrassed.

Now, when you have an owner that is first and foremost that BAD at performing the service which she is supposed to be a master at, and then you add a rude and nasty temperament, and then top it off with an utter lack of common business sense, you basically have a train wreck in the making. Which is why I titled my post as I have. There is a saying in business that "**** rolls downhill." Now I know why everything was so crappy there! It all makes sense.

So let us recap. Because of this experience and how it was handled, our rude inept owner has not only lost a customer, but has done so in the worst possible way, and at the worst possible time - when her first serious competition in the neighborhood (The Men's Room) has just launched their establishment two blocks down the road, headed by the nicest and perhaps the most talented of SOM's former staff. How's that for moronic? Plus, she pissed me off sufficiently that I am sitting here writing this blog for all of Philly to read!

Had I known The Men's Room was open 2 weeks ago, I could have avoided this whole mess. Perhaps my experience at SOM will help The Men's Room build a substantial clientele, and put SOM out of business at the same time. Now THAT would be well worth the agg I endured!

In six weeks, when my hair grows back, I will definitely be going to see the girls in the Men's Room. Based on what I saw when I walked in there, I am certain I will like it better. The whole atmosphere feels great, and the girls in charge seem not only to be really sweet, but also to have their act together...In fact this brings to mind the flip side of that business saying; "Honey, too, rolls downhill." Which is why I am sure the Men's Room of Manayunk will be a huge success!!
