Style of Man Going Out of Business Print E-mail

I have to begin this post by saying that I have been a regular customer on and off at SOM for nearly three years. Despite spotty service, I kept going there honestly because the girls were so cute. I know, terrible criteria upon which to choose a place that is supposed to first and foremost HELP you look better for the ladies, not hurt. Nonetheless, they were cheap, they could almost always accomodate me, and as I said, the scenery was nice.

Maybe they figured they could get away with giving such mediocre cuts because there were enough shmucks out there willing to fork over $35 to ogle a couple of cute asses while some third rate stylist chopped off all their hair. I dunno. Sadly, I was one of them on too many occasions.

But no more! I have now proudly removed the "S" (for SUCKER) from my forehead after my last and final experience there. About 2 weeks ago, I needed a simple cleaning up for the date I had the following evening. My usual stylist was on vacation, so Cathy the owner said she would take care of me. She has been cutting hair for 20 years she said. I figure no problem; I am in good hands.

Well, after explaining that all I needed was a simple trimming, that I wanted to keep the length, she proceeds to give me the shortest haircut I've had since shaving my head 3 years ago. I'm not kidding. I was ready for boot camp, or to star in Dumb and Dumber III. So I say to her, after we are finished, "You know, I gotta ask...can you please explain to me how you can be cutting hair for 20 years and a guy comes in and specifically asks you to keep his length, and you give him this? I mean how does that happen?"

Well, instead of a professional, courteous response which I would expect from OWNER of an establishment (e.g. "I am so sorry, next cut is on us...or so sorry, this cut's on us, please come back and let us make it right next time, etc.), she proceeds to tell me that it is NOT a short haircut and in fact she thinks it is a WONDERFUL haircut! I said, "Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous. I specifically asked you NOT to cut it short and look at me." To which she says, "That will be $35 please."

I was dumbstruck. The other girl she had working there couldn't even look up she was so embarrassed.

Now, when you have an owner that is first and foremost that BAD at performing the service which she is supposed to be a master at, and then you add a rude and nasty temperament, and then top it off with an utter lack of common business sense, you basically have a train wreck in the making. Which is why I titled my post as I have. There is a saying in business that "**** rolls downhill." Now I know why everything was so crappy there! It all makes sense.

So let us recap. Because of this experience and how it was handled, our rude inept owner has not only lost a customer, but has done so in the worst possible way, and at the worst possible time - when her first serious competition in the neighborhood (The Men's Room) has just launched their establishment two blocks down the road, headed by the nicest and perhaps the most talented of SOM's former staff. How's that for moronic? Plus, she pissed me off sufficiently that I am sitting here writing this blog for all of Philly to read!

Had I known The Men's Room was open 2 weeks ago, I could have avoided this whole mess. Perhaps my experience at SOM will help The Men's Room build a substantial clientele, and put SOM out of business at the same time. Now THAT would be well worth the agg I endured!

In six weeks, when my hair grows back, I will definitely be going to see the girls in the Men's Room. Based on what I saw when I walked in there, I am certain I will like it better. The whole atmosphere feels great, and the girls in charge seem not only to be really sweet, but also to have their act together...In fact this brings to mind the flip side of that business saying; "Honey, too, rolls downhill." Which is why I am sure the Men's Room of Manayunk will be a huge success!!
